Not many pitchers want to end up in the bullpen.  Former Padres pitcher Bill Grief told us on our interview with him that he “preferred starting, almost any pitcher does.” That statement, however, doesn’t apply to Colby Blueberg.  Since he first stepped onto the field with the University of Nevada, Colby has been a fixture in the bullpen, primarily as a closer.  His father, former minor leaguer Jim Blueberg, was exactly the opposite – starting every game of his minor league career except on one occasion in 1991 with Jacksonville.

Colby Blueberg – Eugene Emeralds

Drafted by the Padres in 2014, Colby has been lights-out coming out of the bullpen.  Assigned first to A- Eugene and then finishing with a cup of coffee in A Fort Wayne, Blueberg’s numbers were off the chart!  Going 3-0 with an unheard of 0.55 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings.  The Padres moved Colby to Fort Wayne for the season (except for an emergency call up for 1 game to Lake Elsinore where he got hit hard), Colby became the closer for the Tin Caps.  Over the course of the 2015 season in Fort Wayne, Colby was 4-1 with 21 saves, a 1.07 ERA, and striking out 64 in 60 1/3 innings!

This season, Colby will be Francisco Morales’ closer, and with Colby in the game, it’s lights-out for the other team.  With that, we hope you enjoy our interview with Lake Elsinore Storm closer Colby Blueberg.

Be sure to take the short drive up the I-15 and catch some games with our Padres high A affiliate. It’s always a fun day at The Diamond and it gives you a chance to see the future Padres. The Storm is currently home through April 20, 2016.  Click here for the full schedule.
