Bill Almon was the #1 draft pick in baseball by the Padres in 1974 out of Brown University.  He played with the Padres off and on until 1977 when the Padres called him up from Hawaii.  He started at SS in 1977 but moved to 3B when Ozzie Smith was called up in 1978.  He career spanned 15 years with the Expos, Mets, White Sox, A’s, Pirates and Phillies.  His best season was in 1981 with the White Sox when he hit .301 in 103 games.  We had a chance to talk to Billy and get his thoughts on his career in baseball.

Padres360 – What is the proudest moment of your Major League career?

Billy – There are many, but just making it to the Majors is something I am very proud of and then playing in 15 straight seasons.

Padres360 – What path did you take after your Major League career?

Billy – I returned home to Rhode Island and started a construction company.  Eventually I joined my family’s healthcare company.

Padres360 – Where are you and what are you doing now?

Billy – We live in Rhode Island and I am VP of the The Claflin Company, our family owned business.

Padres360 – Who were some of your favorite Padres players when you were on the club?

Billy – Mike Champion, Johnny Grubb and Willie McCovey were my favorites.

Padres360 – What advice would you give to young players coming up?

Billy – Work hard and stay clean.  Not always do the most talented make it to the top.

We hope you enjoyed reading about Billy and how he is doing.  We love talking to our former Padres players.
