Volquez, Cabrera, and Gyorko Milestones

June 3, 2013 by Rebecca Herman

SAN DIEGO PADRES

Unfortunately, our Padres fell 7-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays in 11 innings on Sunday, June 2, 2013.  It was a night game due to the Rock and Roll Marathon earlier in the day.  The temperature for the 7:10 PM game was 65 degrees and there were 20,384 in attendance.

EDISON VOLQUEZ

Edison Volquez  threw 98 pitches (62 strikes) in 5 innings and struck out 7 for a total of 48 strikouts this season. Most notably for last night, he hit his first career home run off of Ramon Ortiz in the bottom of the second inning. It was a three-bagger and brought the game to a 4-4 tie. This makes Edison the first Padres pitcher to homer in an interleague game and he notched the 60th home run by a pitcher in Padres franchise history.

EVERTH CABRERA

Cabby keeps stealing! Last night Everth Cabrera recorded his third multi-stolen base game of the season and is now tied for second in the majors for that category in 2013. Overall, he now has 21 stolen bases this year … that is #1 in the NL and tied with Jacoby Ellsbury (Boston) in the AL for the season. Since the start of 2012, he has stolen third base 15 times and that ties him with Juan Pierre.

JEDD GYORKO

Jedd Gyorko has now recorded a hit in 39 of his first 53 career games, the most by a Padres rookie in franchise history at this stage of their career (Tony Gwynn in 1982 and Roberto Alomar in 1988 each had a hit in 37 of their first 53 games). In addition, his 14 doubles are the most ever by a Padres player in his first 53 career games as he passes Dave Roberts (1972) and Broderick Perkins (1978) who each had 13. Jedd even recorded his first career stolen base in the 6th inning.

  1. Love the mentions of Dave Roberts and Broderick Perkins. Love the old time Padres info.
